Car-Pedestrian Accidents

Have you been hit by a car?

According to statistics, eleven percent of motor vehicle accident deaths involve pedestrians. Because pedestrians can maneuver themselves more easily than a vehicle, they have an increased ability to avoid a collision with a vehicle.  However, when a pedestrian is struck by a motor vehicle there is great potential for very serious injury.

Common causes for pedestrian accidents involving a vehicle are:

Ignoring traffic controls – When a vehicle ignores traffic lights, stop signs, or yield signs there is an increased chance of a pedestrian accident.  Pedestrians use these signals, as well as crosswalks, to safely navigate intersections and roadways.

Jaywalking – When a pedestrian chooses to ignore traffic controls and cross a roadway in an unexpected location or at an unexpected time, they increase their risk of accident and injury.

Walking on a highway – Some roadways are limited to vehicle traffic only. Vehicles on these roadways are generally traveling at high speeds.  When a pedestrian walks on a roadway designated for this purpose, drivers will not be expecting to see a pedestrian and this increases the likelihood of a car-pedestrian accident.

Child darting into roadway – Young children crossing or playing in roadways may not be aware of cars driving toward or near them. They may be chasing toys or pets and extreme caution should be used when driving near locations frequented by children such as parks,, schools, or residential neighborhoods.

Passing a school bus – Ignoring school bus stop signs and flashing lights puts children in great danger who are exiting the school bus and are crossing the street in front of the bus.

Drunk driving – Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs increases the risk of all types of accidents. Drivers under the influence may not be alert to their surroundings and may not notice pedestrians as easily as responsible drivers.
